A jammed garbage disposal that hums without spinning, leaks greasy wastewater into your under-sink cabinet, or trips the electrical breaker completely paralyzes your kitchen sink. Food waste disposers endure heavy daily punishment, and in Upland kitchens, hard mineral water combined with fibrous foods, fruit pits, and cooking grease leads to premature motor burnout and cutter plate seizure. We provide prompt diagnostics, unjamming service, and installation of durable, high-torque stainless steel replacement disposals.
When a disposal hums but the shredder ring refuses to turn, the motor is energized but physically locked by an obstruction—such as an avocado pit, chicken bone, or utensil. Leaving the switch on in this state quickly overheats the motor windings, causing the internal red thermal overload reset button on the bottom of the housing to trip. Never place your hands inside the grind chamber. We safely free seized impellers using hex wrenches and mechanical purchase, clear the obstruction, and test electrical load draw.
If you discover water pooling in the cabinet beneath your disposal, pinpointing the leak's origin determines whether repair is feasible. If water is dripping from the upper mounting ring, replacing the plumber's putty seal and tightening the three-bolt mounting flange will solve the problem. However, if brown water is dripping directly from the bottom reset button or electrical junction box, the internal motor shaft seal has failed, allowing water into the motor housing. In this scenario, the unit is electrically hazardous and must be replaced.
Builder-grade 1/3-horsepower disposers feature stamped steel components that rust through within four to six years. When replacement is required, we install heavy-duty 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP, or 1.0 HP units featuring Dura-Drive induction motors and 100% stainless steel grinding chambers. These models easily pulverize fibrous vegetables, operate with advanced sound-dampening insulation, and feature auto-reversing cutter impellers to prevent future jams.
Unaddressed plumbing wear damages building materials, increases water waste, and risks sudden structural failures.
We install durable, commercial-grade materials designed for long-term reliability in the Cucamonga Valley.
Immediately turn off the wall switch to prevent motor burnout. You can attempt to insert a 1/4-inch hex wrench into the breaker socket in the center of the unit's bottom housing and manually rotate it back and forth to free the jam. If it remains locked, call our Upland team.
